December 2012

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a happy and healthy start. When I was thinking about my December update, I realized I had many things I could share with you all. December was a month of great news for Girls Inc. Overall, the seniors in my College Mentoring Program are making progress on their college applications and working hard to get their essays completed. We had a chance to celebrate both the teens and mentors at our last mentoring meeting before we took a couple weeks off for winter break. The teens received gift bags from volunteers who donate  amazing gifts every holiday season and mentors received mentoring gift bags from Girls Inc.

We are also very proud to announce that two of our seniors received prestigious Posse Foundation scholarships for the upcoming fall 2013 college year . Girls Inc. nominated Caroline and Messeret this past summer for the scholarship and they underwent a rigorous interview process that included several  rounds. The POSSE Foundation seeks high achieving students that exhibit great leadership qualities from several cohorts around the United States (Lynn students were recruited for the Boston cohort). The students that receive POSSE scholarships are accepted to liberal arts colleges that are POSSE partners and are given four year full tuition scholarships along with a network of summer and post-graduate opportunities. This fall Caroline with attend Denison in Ohio and Messeret will attend Bucknell in Pennsylvania.

In addition, Girls Inc. had the opportunity to take 10 peer leaders to the Massachusetts Conference on Women in early December. Since scholarship slots were given by the conference organizers, I was also able to attend as a staff member. It was an incredible experience for me as well as the teens to be in the presence of extraordinary women from a variety of different fields and to be inspired by their work. The teens said that one of the major highlights of the conference for them was Arianna Huffington’s keynote address during lunch. Some teens even approached Arianna at the end of the conference to get their notebook signed by her.

December was a busy month for me and the Girls Inc. I am looking forward to the New Year and to having more exciting things to report!
