May Monthly Meeting: May 28th & 29th

Our first day of training kicked off with a wonderful surprise – awesome Panera Breakfast and coffee courtesy of our lovely MPF Staff! Next, Fellows took part in a skill share facilitated by First Year Fellow Jennifer Pamphile on the topic of Growth Vs. Fixed Mindsets and Teachable Moments. Fellows played a game created by Jennifer, where they pulled two random words and found insightful ways to teach youth how the two words relate.

At this time of year, Fellows are planning their next professional ventures. Whether they serve a second year with the Fellowship, begin to make their way into the working world, or even go back to school; Fellows are trained and prepared each step of the way. In light of the time of year, Fellows entered a training lead by MPF Staff and Alum: Life After AmeriCorps Part II: Winning at the Interview with Colleen and Yves Singletary, Class XII & XLLL Alum/ MPF Advisory Board Member. Fellows heard stories of the best & worst interview tips and techniques and also had the chance to have any of their burning questions about interviewing best practices answered. After lunch, Fellows took in some more information with a training titled, Exiting Your Service Like a Champ with Katy Allen!

On the second day of May trainings, Fellows got the morning started with an energetic skill shared taught by First Year Fellow Priscilla Cruz on Salsa Dancing! Priscilla combined her soulful dance skills with her quick humor in order to instruct the entire Fellowship through the art of Salsa! Next Fellows moved into Life After AmeriCorps Part lll: Finding Your Fit with Colleen and Senior Fellow Jenny Woodford. In this workshop, fellows spent time reflecting on their personal values, desires, and needs for their professional endeavors. They brainstormed their ideal day and ideal work place culture. Fellows discussed how to decipher these things from a job description as well as how to empower their networks to help them find the best fit.

What better way to get insight into next steps after AmeriCorps than to hear from our amazing MPF Alums! Fellows were treated to an Alumni Panel hosted by Senior Fellow Amanda Maddalone and they were able to ask any question they had about life Post-Fellowship. Shout out to the Alums who volunteered their time to share their experiences with us: Katie Walper, Renata Caines, Niea Gardner, Amy Cheung and Emma Rawls!

After lunch, Fellows were lead in a brand new training by MPF Staff Cecelia Auditore and Second Year Fellow Aminata Kaba on the topic of Supporting Your Youth As You Move On. Too often in youth work programs end, staff members switch jobs, and teens age out of organizations without proper goodbyes. This can be incredibly damaging and hurtful to both young people and adult staff. MPF has recognized a need for Fellows to be properly trained on this topic and has delivered! After discussions around different parting techniques, Aminata lead the group in a closing activity called “Warm & Fuzzies”. Everyone in the group writes genuine, kind and caring compliments to each other on sticky notes until we filled up an entire wall. At the end, Fellows were able to take the notes with their names on them to read and keep as mementos!

Next up was a debrief and overview of Promise Fellow Week (more to come soon!), and general MPF updates. We concluded the two day training with our ceremonial Pass The Wagon. Only one more monthly meeting left before The Class of 16 wraps up their service year! What beautiful year it’s been so far.

Love in Service,
