Fellow of the Week: Jack Gorsline

Jack (He/Him/His) is a first-year fellow serving as a College Access Advisor and Digital Media Strategist with La Vida Scholars!

What inspired you to serve with MPF and what are you most looking forward to this year?

I was inspired to serve with MPF after moving to Boston In June 2020 and falling in love with service as a member of The Boston Plan For Excellence’s Dudley Promise Corps Member serving Roxbury 3rd, 7th, and 10th grade students at Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School and Dearborn STEM Academy, respectively. Upon completion of my year with the DPC, I was referred to MPF, applied, and here I am!

What does a typical day in the life of an MPF fellow look like?

Conducting 1 on 1 meetings with students, developing LVS’ college access curriculum content, facilitating social justice and life skills workshops for La Vida’s Junior and Senior students. Additionally monitoring, maintaining, and expanding La Vida’s digital footprint on Instagram and LinkedIn.

What do you appreciate about your host site?

I appreciate LVS’ Executive Director Peter Barros’ and LVS’ Director of Programs Jesenia Gervacio for their hands-on training, mentorship, scheduling flexibility in a time of public health uncertainty, and the empathetic, progressive organizational culture at La Vida Scholars.

What are your plans after MPF and how is doing a year of service helping?

I plan to pursue either a Master’s Degree (Subject Area TBD) or to attend Law School.

What is your favorite part of working with youth?

Empowering my students to see the very best in themselves as they prepare to take the leap into their college futures and beyond.

What is your life motto/ mantra/ affirmation?

Never stop learning.

What is your favorite way to practice self-care, especially during this year of service?

Long walks and pickup basketball!
